The Cholq'ij Calendar System
I’ve been on a personal journey to reconnect with my heritage and the wisdom of my own Maya people especially Cholq’ij–our calendar system. Personally, it was overwhelming to learn about our Cholq’ij system, what it means, what it means to me, and how to incorporate it into my life authentically. I hope to help others like me by presenting information in different ways. This means that I compile daily interpretations from different sources and make it accessible in one place. It’s incredible how accurate our Cholq’ij system is—unrelated sources still match up on the same day and Nahual!
The Cholq'ij is our sacred Maya calendar with 260 days. It's made up of 20 day-signs, Nahuales–combined with 13 numbers, cycling through every possible combination. This system is central to understanding time, energy, and the connection between human life and the cosmos.
Each of the 20 Nahuales represents different aspects of life, nature, or cosmic forces, while the 13 numbers indicate the intensity of the day’s energy. Together, these guide people’s spiritual growth, personal journeys, and understanding of events.
The Cholq'ij is still used today by Maya spiritual leaders for ceremonies, readings, and guidance in daily life. It helps people align with natural cycles, offering insight into their purpose, energy, and how to navigate life’s challenges. The word Nawal stems from the Nahuatl language and is synonymous with deities, spirit guides and archetypal energies.
What is a Mayan Cross?
The second part to our Cholq’ij system is that each person born has a cross that corresponds with the energies around you at the time of your birth. You have one and only one Cross based on your birth date.
For centuries the Mayan Cross has been used by specialized shamans, called Daykeepers, to counsel their communities on how to develop self-awareness and live according to the soul's purpose.
Imagine being born knowing what your cosmic blueprint looks like
The Mayan Cross is not astrology. Astrology is based on the celestial positioning of planets and stars in our solar system. Instead, the Mayan Cross and the Mayan sacred calendar are based on galactic energetic forces.
To interpret a Mayan Cross is more a function of knowing the archetypal signature of each component, combined with looking within to see how these energies manifest and guide us. It is more appropriate to think of working with the Mayan Cross as energy work. The best way to understand your Mayan Cross is to sit with it, feel and embody it.
Are you interested in learning more?
I invite anyone interested in learning more can watch my (almost) daily Cholq’ij videos on Tiktok. In my daily Cholq’ij readings, I go through all of my sources– I don’t edit what they say, I compile everything into one document, and read it from there.
I know people learn in a lot of different ways that’s why along with my videos you can also download a free copy of my compilation document. It’s the same document where I compile all my information but I’ve edited it so that’s user-friendly. This free resource includes links to my sources along with extra photos and visuals. I am working on a dictionary resource too.
For me, this work is personal and also is like an ongoing academic journal. These daily readings have the same intention and weight as a well-researched thesis—they’re not static. They are reflections of where I’m at right now in my understanding, with room to grow. If I had found a resource and tool like this when I was starting out to learn about myself, it would have made a world of difference to me.
I do this in my own time while I’m also a full-time student studying marine biology. If you find my resources valuable and are capable please consider donating to help cover the time it takes me to compile, edit, and present these readings in a way that’s clear and accessible to everyone.
Your support helps me keep this going—not just for me, but for anyone who finds these resources useful in their own journey toward reconnection. I’m working on constantly updating my website so my information is local and accessible. I cover the cost of the domain and host myself. I also am offering personal readings where I research your Mayan Cross and give you a deep-dive into yourself.
Thank you and stay wonderful!
